Established in 2000, Osian's Auction House and Archive redefines the role and responsibility of the traditional art auction house. Osian's was conceived to function both as a corporate organization and as an institution for the arts. Moving away from the economics of patronage, Osian's Auction House and Archive has established a holistic and financially self-sufficient model for creating an independent arts infrastructure in India.
The wealth created by the Osian's Auction House supports Osian's Centre for Archiving, Research and Documentation (CARD), which in its turn produces the extensive knowledge capital that reinforces the wealth generating activities of the Auction House.
Osian's pioneering auctions bring together a collection of rare and high quality works of art, a majority of which are not accessible through the usual gallery and dealer networks. These auctions of modern and contemporary Indian Fine Arts, Sculpture, Antaiquities, Film Memorabilia, Photographs, Rare Books, Lithographs, and Popular Culture artefacts are based on sound knowledge and extensive research.
Osian's curated auctions were conceived as a response to the need to deepen the art historical sensibility within India. A compelling critical-historical narrative attending a work of art impacts public understanding of the economic value attached to aesthetic "quality". Thus, these curated auctions have been instrumental in developing aesthetic, historical and financial benchmarks in the Indian art market. The auction catalogues, which are works of art in themselves, have also set new international standards in documentation, research and design.
